I am going to look at colleges over vacation and I think that my dream job would be something to do with fashion merchandising or being like a buyer. I am not sure what major would be the best for this. I am thinking either marketing or advertising/public relations. Which major would help me with those career goals and also offer me the most flexibility in finding other jobs?

I am a very creative person who loves science but has grown tired of typical bench work. I will be completing my PhD this spring and I’d like to break into marketing and/or advertising, with a long-term goal of working for a pharmaceutical company in their marketing department. I have an excellent science background. I have some hand-on experience in marketing, advertising, and PR for groups I volunteer with (college alumni group and sorority), but I have no formal training in marketing and my experience is rather spread out over the years. Any advice on how to break into a marketing/advertising job? I know I’ll have to start at the ground and work my way up and I’m very willing to do it–how do I convince potential employers to take a chance? Thank you for all answers!

What is the best position or industry to enter a marketing career out of college?

I am looking to start a career in marketing, my ideal job would be brand manager, but most companies require several years experience in order to even apply for a job. Is there a type of company or industry that offers entry-level marketing postitions or training that would fulfill these experience requirements?

How can I find freelance marketing/PR work?

I currently work in marketing/PR and am planning on quitting my full-time job in a few months to go back to school and earn a second bachelor’s in civil engineering (and thus change careers). While I’m in school, I’ll need to earn some money, and I figure a good option for me would be doing freelance marketing/PR projects - flexible hours and hopefully better pay per hour than waiting tables. For those of you that currently do freelance marketing/PR, do you have any tips for finding work? I’ve browsed craigslist, but that isn’t always reliable (I don’t want those work-for-free-but-build-your-portfolio jobs). I’m in the Chicago area if it makes a difference.

Also, if I create an online portfolio of my work, does anyone know if I can I feature work I’ve done for my current employer (now or after I leave)? I don’t want to get in any copyright trouble. I’m not sure how to approach my boss with that question just yet.

How do you start a marketing firm?

jd88 asked:
I know it’s not for everyone and I know you need an extensive knowledge. But I was wondering who can start a marketing firm/consulting business and how would you go on about starting it?
Anybody with some knowledge of starting a marketing firm, please give me some detailed information because I am anxious to know.
I graduated with a degree in Business, and unfortunately I have not taken many marketing classes. But I am willing to take more if needed.
Let me know how this works. Thanks a lot!

I’d be interested if anyone knows how to adapt the calculation of Marginal return for marketing spend. I’m trying to work out an ideal cost per application for my online marketing spend. If I can develop a marginal returns graph based on previous spend I think I can find this ‘ideal’ level.

Marketing strategy consists of selecting a segment of the market as the company’s target market and designing the proper marketing “mix” that meets the needs of that segment. Discuss how this is achieved.
